For the setting, while the first series was more or less medieval, and the second series had more or less an Industrial Revolution kind of spin, the third series could go with a retrofuturistic sort of feel. Avatar isn't a series, it's a universe. The Last Airbender of The Legend of Korra are series. Both of those series end when they complete their story, but there is no reason to not create more stories in the huge universe of Avatar.

There is no right answer to this. Call it what you will. The fact remains Anime == Cartoons. In Japan all cartoons are anime. In Korea, aeni, in China, donghua.
People call it by the word from their respective nation because it distinguishes. It's what makes a Deep-Dish pizza different form a Sicilian pizza.
